Norwich City beat Sunderland 1-0 to secure their third successive Championship win, with Josh Sargent’s late goal the difference at the Stadium of Light.

The hosts had the chance to open the scoring in a first half which they dominated, with Ellis Simms missing his header from Alex Pritchard’s cross. The pattern continued with Ross Stewart’s tame aerial effort seven minutes later, before Sargent had City’s first opportunity.

The American was set up by Onel Hernandez after Kieran Dowell’s long pass but could only fire Anthony Patterson in the chest with his left foot.

Sargent had another chance after trading a one-two with Dowell, before Hanley was forced into two goal-line clearances – first from Corry Evans and then from Pritchard – to keep the scores level.

Simms then hit the woodwork after Stewart did the same to tee-up Pritchard, propelling her head into the ground but seeing it bounce away from danger.

Against the run of play, Dean Smith’s side then broke the deadlock, with substitute Aaron Ramsey finding Sargent for a tap-in after Marcelino Nunez fumbled him.

The win means City’s first away points of the season, with a trip to Birmingham City next Tuesday.
