Houssem Aouar among four linked names as Jurgen Klopp makes huge U-turn at Liverpool on signing midfielder

Jurgen Klopp has revealed Liverpool are back in the hunt for a midfield signing this month – and they could smash Nottingham Forest’s plans for Houssem Aouar, with the Lyon star one of four names linked with the Reds.

The Merseysiders entered the new season seemingly satisfied with their transfer activity. Liverpool have broken their club record to snare Darwin Nunez in a deal that could top £85million. They also secured their future with deals for Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho.

The one area Liverpool decided to overlook was their midfield. This was expected to be their main area of reinforcement this summer. However, after seeing the efforts to reward Aurélien Tchouameni fail, the track has since calmed down. Tchouameni has since revealed why he rejected Liverpool’s advances in favor of Real Madrid.

Liverpool have been linked with Dortmund’s young English midfielder Jude Bellingham. However, Dortmund – who only sanction one major sale per summer – are expected to do no business this year.

A summer 2023 hit for Bellingham appears to be on the cards although Liverpool are said to have already laid the groundwork.

That doesn’t do much to help Liverpool at the moment, however. And Klopp was adamant earlier this summer that his options were well covered.

In a heated explanation in July, Klopp was adamant he was happy with his options.

“We can go through it. Where do you want to start? Thus, Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago, Milner, Keita, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho, Oxlade-Chamberlain. Now tell me what kind of player are we missing? The one who is offensive, 1.95m and who arrives in the area to head? Well, other than that!

“We have three players in the team who can easily play as a No.6 – Fabinho, of course, but Hendo and Milly played well.”

Klopp enters Liverpool with Houssem Aouar among targets

However, with Liverpool suffering from injuries to a number of key players, Klopp has now made a U-turn. With four of his midfielders currently sidelined, Klopp’s options were seriously exhausted in Monday’s loss to Manchester United.

As such, the Reds boss now admits that Liverpool are actively looking for a new midfield signing before the window closes.

“You were right and I was wrong” as he revealed he desperately wanted a new recruit in the area. And when asked if he wanted anyone in before the window closed at 11 p.m. Thursday, he admitted: “That has of course changed.

“I know we’ve had this discussion since it all started and I’m the one who said we don’t need a midfielder and you were right and I was wrong.

“That’s the situation. There’s really nothing more to say about it. We look for him, and if he’s the right player, we need him and if he’s not the right player, we don’t need him.

Speak DailyMirrorLiverpool apparently have four potential targets in mind before the window closes.

They remain on Bellingham’s trail and could try again to convince Dortmund to sell.

However, other names would also be in the frame. And they could be looking to snare former target Aouar de Lyon, amid claims they are looking to sell.

He has been linked with a move to Nottingham Forestalthough a move to Anfield would clearly have more appeal.

Brighton’s Moises Caicedo is another name in the frame, with the Reds linked with moves for him this week.

And there remains a possible interest in Dutch star Frenkie de Jong, whose future at Barcelona remains uncertain.

Carragher admits Liverpool need a new midfielder

PSG’s Leandro Parades has also been mentioned as a target. However, at 28, the Mirror claims he may be too old.

Of all the options, it is perhaps Houssem Aouar who seems the most accessible. With just one year left on his contract, Lyon are apparently only looking for £12.5m (€15m) to let him go – a fair price given his talent and age .

That kind of fee wouldn’t break the Reds’ bank and it’s a signing that would make a lot of sense. Indeed, he was first mentioned as a Liverpool target a few years ago.

Jamie Carragher has also made it clear that Liverpool need a new midfield signing.

“Jurgen Klopp is not stupid,” said Carragher. “He knows that when he looks at his first-choice midfield of Thiago, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, it’s a very good midfield, but they’re all over 30. It’s not ideal for any team, certainly when you want to play as intense as Liverpool do.

“They have a lot of numbers there. Milner can get in there, and there’s Keita and Curtis Jones, but if you’re talking about real top quality, Liverpool need a midfielder. If he was available now, Liverpool would buy him, but obviously they have something planned for next summer.
