“Get over it! ‘: Laura Woods joins fans in hitting back at Richard Keys after he slammed Arsenal for ‘over-celebrating’ their win over Fulham which propelled them top of the Premier League

  • Richard Keys thinks Arsenal ‘celebrated too much’ over Fulham win
  • Laura Woods disagrees and believes Arsenal have every right to celebrate

Presenter Laura Woods has come to the defense of Arsenal after Richard Keys accused them of ‘over-celebrating’ their 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday.

The Gunners fell behind a goal from Aleksandar Mitrovic shortly after half-time, but equalized through a deflected forward from Martin Odegaard, before Gabriel netted the winner four minutes from time, sparking jubilant scenes at the final whistle.

The result kept Arsenal’s 100 per cent start to the season and took them back to the top of the table, but Keys was unimpressed by the cheering celebrations at the Emirates Stadium.

“I understand that Arsenal fans celebrate the way they did. I felt the manager and his players celebrated too much in a 2-1 win over Fulham,’ Keys said on beIN SPORTS on Sunday.

“I think that kind of reaction to what happened yesterday from Arteta and co tells me how low they have fallen.

“Arsene Wenger would have been kicked out of the arena if his side had won a 2-1 win with indeed an own goal well off target until he took a deflection and a gift from Jay (Bernd) Leno .”

It’s not the first time Keys has criticized Arsenal’s celebrations after a positive result. However, on this occasion Woods, who supports Arsenal, chose to hit back at his fellow presenter as she claimed the reaction to the win showed how Mikel Arteta had brought the club’s fan base back after a few difficult spells in recent years.

“I don’t understand why we are suddenly not allowed to celebrate victories anymore. Let me tell you why: four out of four wins for Arsenal, you’re also missing key players in that win, Partey and Zinchenko,’ Woods said on talkSPORT.

“Last season at this stage we were taking bets on this show for Arsenal relegation and for Mikel Arteta to lose his job. So I don’t think this celebration was necessarily about beating Fulham. It was probably a combination of things. Probably a lot of relief in that as well as the way Mikel Arteta has transformed this club.

“Give us some breathing room, give us some credit in this. I also think a lot of it is about rebuilding this team and rebuilding the relationship with the fans, which was so important to Mikel Arteta.

“To rebuild the relationship with the fan base to the point where they are celebrating after beating Fulham to this point is positive for me, it’s great. It just shows that your fanbase is completely engaged, they like what they see. It’s not just about who you beat, it’s the football they play, and it’s the position you put yourself in.

“It’s the Premier League, anything can happen. Enjoy it while it’s there. Don’t rain on the parade of people. If you’re not allowed to party and someone is going to come and say, “Wait a minute, that’s a bit too much! It feels like a Premier League celebration, why are you celebrating like you’ve won the league?’ It’s just celebrating a game. It means something to someone. Moving on!’

A number of Arsenal supporters backed Woods’ position, saying the north London club had been unfairly targeted.

“When other teams win they are allowed to celebrate. For Arsenal we are not allowed either. Setting double standards,’ a fan wrote on Twitter.

‘Richard Keys always talks about Arsenal. Amazing,’ another fan posted, alongside a laughing face emoji.

Meanwhile, one fan insisted supporters would continue to celebrate Arsenal’s success despite criticism from Keys.

“We will continue to celebrate… Let this sink in!!!” they wrote.

Arsenal are the only Premier League side to collect maximum points so far this season, and they will have the chance to continue their winning streak when they host Aston Villa on Wednesday.
