“They [the PGA Tour] We’ve had a tough time this year, but we’re getting through it. It was a spectacle today, two of the best players in the world battling it out for the biggest prize on the PGA Tour, and I hope everyone back home enjoyed it.”

McIlroy mixed six birdies with two bogeys in the final round to hold off Scheffler, who led for much of the week before narrowly missing out on a fifth PGA Tour victory of the campaign.

“I feel like Scottie [Scheffler] deserve at least half of that today,” added McIlroy. “He had an incredible season. I feel a little bad for propelling him to the post, but he’s a hell of a competitor.

“He’s an even better guy. It was an honor and a privilege to fight with him and I’m sure we’ll have many more. I told him we were one all in Georgia today: he got the Masters and I got this!

Scottie Scheffler birdied just one on his final round, having birdied four in six holes to complete his third round earlier in the day.

“I didn’t really give myself much of a chance at the start today. I was thinking six behind, I thought it was going to be really hard to catch. But my good game and Scottie’s not so good game, and that was a ball game in the back nine.”

Scheffler – playing alongside McIlroy – saw his six-stroke advantage vanish with three bogeys in the first six holes of his final round on Sunday, with the Masters champion finishing tied for second alongside Sungjae Im after a three-for-73.

“I hit the ball really well today,” Scheffler said. “For some reason I couldn’t get enough stares. Maybe if I could take a few back shots I’d probably take the ride back on the 16th.

“But other than that, I really struggled today. Rory [McIlroy] just played a very good round of golf. He made some key putts there at the end, and he definitely deserved to win.

“He played a really good round of golf. A really solid four days here. I’m not sure exactly how he started the week but I’m sure he was close to winning the tournament individually as well. He played a great round of golf today and played well enough to win.
