Aberdeen beat Annan in Ligue 2 in extra time

Annan’s captain Steven Swinglehurst forced extra time with a powerful header at Galabank

Aberdeen avoided one of the biggest upsets in their history by beating League Two’s Annan Athletic in extra time to reach the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals.

Vicente Besuijen kicked off a scrappy opener for the Premiership side, before Annan captain Steven Swinglehurst planted a header past Kelle Roos with nine minutes remaining to force extra time.

But Luis Lopes, Besuijen and Leighton Clarkson killed their resistance as Aberdeen finally got the job done after an unconvincing 90 minutes.

It was a brave effort from Annan, who are second bottom in League Two, but although they gave their high-flying opponents a real scare, it was Jim Goodwin’s side who is in Wednesday’s Round of 16 tie.

It was the first competitive meeting between these clubs and Goodwin will be relieved to complete the 440 mile round trip to Galabank still in competition.

Annan made the evening difficult and had the best chance in the first half when Tommy Muir’s header returned to a post, before Aberdeen came out stronger in the second and went past when a low cross from Jonny Hayes found Besuijen, who tapped in.

Swinglehurst’s powerful header stunned the Premiership visitors and forced an extra 30 minutes, but all of Annan’s hopes of a famous win were quickly dashed.

Clarkson whipped into a corner for Lopes to peek home and, after Roos brilliantly saved from Benjamin Luissint to prevent the hosts from equalising, Hayes kicked in Besuijen’s second.

Clarkson completed the win with a smart finish after a long pass into the box.

Peter Murphy, coach of Annan Athletic: “I’m delighted with my players, they’ve given me absolutely everything. The biggest compliment I can give my players is when we score at 1-1, Jim Goodwin tells his players to sit down for get the extension.”

Jim Goodwin, manager of Aberdeen: “It turned into a tougher match than expected, but not because of any disrespect to the opponent. I don’t want to make excuses for our performance tonight, I want to give full credit to Annan Athletic.

“As with any round of the cup, it’s about moving on to the next round.”
