Klopp ‘pretty sure’ Nunez will keep his cool in derby

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez scored on his Premier League debut against Fulham before being sent off against Crystal Palace

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is “pretty sure” new signing Darwin Nunez won’t take it out on him again if he’s targeted by Everton players on Saturday.

The Uruguay striker, 23, is available for the Merseyside derby after serving a three-match ban.

Nunez was sent off on his home debut last month for headbutting Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen.

“Will it never happen again? I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure nothing will happen in the next game,” Klopp said.

After Nunez was sent off for the second time in his career, Klopp told the former Benfica striker not to let the opposing defenders upset him.

“He’s a wonderful young man, but he also has emotions,” Klopp said. “He made a mistake but we didn’t talk about it for 15 days, telling him ‘you have to calm down’.

“The way we want to think in these situations is that we pay with football,” added the German coach.

“If Darwin is playing, he has to be ready for these things. When a player talks to you a lot or is really physical, then he’s not in his own game, and he [Nunez] must also use this kind of moments.

“If the other is too busy wanting to distract him, just use him from a footballing point of view.

“For the Crystal Palace game, when the defender is looking for that constant contact, go from there and you decide when you start the movement.”

Everton striker Neil Maupay is set to make his debut after being ineligible for the draw at Leeds United, while newcomer Idrissa Gueye could also feature.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure are back in training but not yet available.

Liverpool welcome back Darwin Nunez after his suspension, while Diogo Jota has returned to training.

Jordan Henderson is ruled out after being substituted with a hamstring problem in the win over Newcastle United and Liverpool are still waiting to find out the extent of the injury.

New loan signing Arthur is not expected to receive international clearance until Saturday, but Jurgen Klopp will hope he will be available to face Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Everton are yet to win a game and they are not going to start here. They have snapped up Idrissa Gueye and Neal Maupay should be available, but Liverpool won comfortably at Goodison last season. I don’t think it will be easy for them, but I expect them to come out on the right side.

Mo Salah has yet to start and Liverpool really need to find consistency, which they are working hard to achieve by the minute, but I think they will have too much quality, although Everton will be super aggressive at Goodison.

Prediction: 1-2
