Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel backs striker to break No.9 curse and ‘create his own story’

Thomas Tuchel has backed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to ‘create his own story’ and break the curse of the No.9 at Chelsea.

Chelsea agreed a £10million deal on deadline day for Aubameyang, reuniting the 33-year-old with his former Borussia Dortmund boss Tuchel.

Aubameyang scored 79 goals in 95 appearances under Tuchel at Dortmund, before moving to Arsenal in 2018.

The Gabon striker was, however, relieved as Gunners captain by Mikel Arteta in December 2021 due to disciplinary issues, before moving to Barcelona in January.

Chelsea boss Tuchel joked earlier this summer that his players were scared of the No.9 shirt as the striker’s shirt remained vacant following Romelu Lukaku’s return on loan to Inter Milan.

Lukaku, Tammy Abraham, Gonzalo Higuain, Alvaro Morata and many more have failed to claim Chelsea’s No.9 shirt.

But Tuchel hailed Aubameyang for having the courage to take on this challenge.

“Auba is not afraid of the past and what a number means,” Tuchel said. “He’s ready to fight to create his own story, taking number nine means he’s quite brave.

“Auba, from my point of view, has always been happy to fight for something and accept the challenge, so the more challenges he has the better.”

Aubameyang said he returned to the Premier League with “unfinished business”, no doubt in a nod to the acrimonious end to his time at Arsenal.

Blues boss Tuchel admitted he would be very happy to see his new striker energized and focused as he proves his point.

“If he wants to overcome the curse of number 9, or if he wants to show someone in London that he is better than some people think, then the more the better,” he said. said Tuchel.

“Because he’s up for it and he’s happy. I know him as (being) very focused and in general a very open-hearted person and very happy to be on the pitch every day.

“That’s what we wanted, he has a very positive influence on the training squad.

“He’s ready for any challenge, he’s happy to be on the pitch scoring goals and that’s what we want.”

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was spotted in London on deadline day ahead of his move to Chelsea from Barcelona

Aubameyang arrived at Chelsea with a minor broken jaw, following an attack on his home at the weekend.

The Blues’ new striker will miss Saturday’s Premier League clash with West Ham but could return to training next week.

Chelsea are hoping to fit the striker with a protective mask.

“You have to make sure he gets a mask, provide him with a mask to protect his jaw,” Tuchel said.

“So we will start trying with a mask from next week.”
