Liverpool already OUT of Premier League title race, claims Gabby Agbonlahor

Liverpool are already OUT of the Premier League title race and are now ‘fighting’ to make the top four, claims Gabby Agbonlahor… as the former Aston Villa striker says Jurgen Klopp’s tactics ‘didn’t didn’t work” in the Merseyside derby draw

  • Liverpool have drawn half of their games this season after a stalemate at Everton
  • The Reds won two matches and lost to Manchester United last month
  • Gabby Agbonlahor claims Jurgen Klopp’s men won’t compete for title
  • He expects Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea to challenge the Reds for the top four

Liverpool will not challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this season and will already face a battle to qualify for next season’s Champions League, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have drawn half of their six top-flight games this season following their scoreless stalemate at Goodison Park in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

The Reds were lucky not to suffer their second defeat of the campaign, with Conor Coady having a goal ruled out by VAR and Neal Maupay squandering their best chance.

They therefore sit seventh in the table, six points behind leaders Arsenal and five behind champions Pep Guardiola, with whom they have battled in recent seasons to secure Premier League glory.

And talking about talkSPORTAgbonlahor believes the current form of Arsenal and Tottenham – who sit in third place – means the Reds have to fight in their own hands.

When asked if Liverpool could miss out on the top four, Agbonlahor replied: “100 per cent”. This is not a title battle. Liverpool, for me, are not fighting for the Premier League title this season.

“They are fighting to stay in the top four because Arsenal are there. Spurs are on it – they know how to win games, Arsenal and Spurs. They have this winning mentality and they win games. Chelsea will be fine.

Agbonlahor also slammed Klopp’s tactics against Everton, insisting star striker Mohamed Salah is not currently a goal threat while insisting “something is wrong” with their defence.

“Salah doesn’t look like he wants to score and it’s not like Mo Salah,” he added.

“He has to go wide and find space. The midfield didn’t work. They played Fabinho as a babysitter and in front of him [Harvey] Elliott and [Fabio] Carvalho. It just didn’t work for me today.

‘In back, [Andy] Robertson was dropped, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] was removed after 60 minutes. Something is wrong with this defense with Liverpool and they are losing too many points.

Agbonlahor’s comments come after he was recently embroiled in a public spat with Klopp.

The former Aston Villa striker slammed Man United for their loss to Brentford to the point that Klopp said he had even considered calling talkSPORT.

‘I came home after watching the first half here [at the training ground] and I listened to talkSPORT and Gabby [Agbonlahor],’ he said.

“He lost to us 6-0 in my first year so I couldn’t remember him as a mentality monster on the pitch at the time – but what he said about Man Utd, I was about to call him and say, ‘You completely forgot you were a player.

“And if the old players are already going like this, you can imagine how everything else goes. You have to ask yourself how you want to react in a situation like this.

In an interview with sports mail, replied Agbonlahor. He said: ‘The whole “Gabby who?” thing. Pretending him not to know my last name. Why?

“He watched football. He will know my name.

“And then his team still loses to Man United. He said I was not a mental freak. Well, his team didn’t look like mentality freaks in this game, did they?

“And he’s supposed to be the king of the mentality monsters.”

Agbonlahor then risked the wrath of Reds fans once again, calling out Virgil van Dijk for his defense in their defeat at Man United last month.
