Edu to drop Arsenal chase for Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz as source names Brazilian as Gunners’ No.1 target

Arsenal are unlikely to return for Douglas Luiz in the January transfer window, with the Gunners reportedly ready to spend big on another Brazilian midfielder instead.

The Gunners have made a strong start to the season, winning their first five before suffering defeat at Manchester United on Sunday. That loss – their first loss of the season – didn’t dampen the feeling of well-being around the club too much. And Arsenal are still at the top of the nascent Premier League table with six games played.

Arsenal signed five new players during the summer window, spending over £118m. Costliest of them all was Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian hitting the ground running with three goals and three assists in six appearances. To that end, his £46.98m signing looks like money well spent.

He wasn’t the only Brazilian to sign either. Edu also paid £3.15million to sign winger Marquinhos from Sao Paulo.

Despite their promising start, the only addition to elude Mikel Arteta was a new midfielder. The Gunners boss wanted an extra body to provide cover and competition for Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny.

Arsenal also have Albert Sambi Lokonga in their pool but he may have been cleared to leave on loan. Indeed, an exit for the Belgian might well have been granted had the Gunners managed to land their own midfielder.

To this end, Arsenal were closely linked with Leicester city star Youri Tielemans throughout the summer.

As it went on, the Gunners never followed up on their initial offer and it was in fact AstonVilla star Luiz who was the focus of their attention on Deadline Day.

Arsenal keen to sign Danilo in January

Luiz becomes a free agent next summer, leaving Villa vulnerable to a cut-price exit. As such, Arsenal made an offer of around £20m for his services on deadline day.

Despite his contract situation, however, Villa resisted Arsenal’s approach. And amid claims they were seeking a fee closer to the £40m mark, boss Steven Gerrard was quick to explain why the approach failed.

Reports claim that Arsenal will consider a new approach for Luiz in January. Until then, the Brazilian will only have six months left on his contract if an extension hasn’t been agreed.

However, Edu is now said to have crossed the Villa man off his wanted list. Instead, on Saturday Transfer the gossip explained why a move for Palmeiras star Danilo was more likely.

Danilo, a tough midfielder, has a release clause worth £85.8million. But the feeling is that Palmeiras will sell much lower in January.

This position is also supported by transfer expert Dean Jones.

He claims Arsenal are preparing a new approach for the Palmeiras star after seeing a summer bid fall through.

“I think we can expect Arsenal to maintain their interest in Danilo,” Jones said. GiveMeSport. “They had him set as a top target ahead of the summer window.

“There was a temptation to try for him because of their situation. But he’s a young player in Brazil and they’re happy to pave the way for him next year anyway.

Palmeiras man will be a shrewd signing for Arsenal

Danilo may only be 21 but he has already registered nearly 130 appearances for Palmeiras. And the midfielder has already enjoyed success with the club, helping them beat Flamengo in an all-Brazilian Copa Libertadores final in November.

A fierce tackler with a keen eye for a pass, Danilo is said to be on the verge of breaking into the Brazil team.

And while the 2022 World Cup will surely come too soon, the player is eyeing a certainty for future international recognition.

A move to the Premier League with Arsenal will certainly raise his profile.

The good news for Arsenal is that Edu has apparently already done the groundwork on this deal. To that end, the Gunners hope to relatively easily agree a fee for his services.

And Danilo shouldn’t have any problems settling in at the Emirates Stadium either. Arsenal have a strong Brazilian contingent at the club. Besides Jesus and Marquinhos, they also have Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli.
