Erling Haaland scored in the first half against Sevilla to put Man City ahead in the game

Thierry Henry says he would choose Kylian Mbappe over Erling Haaland

Thierry Henry has insisted he will still choose Kylian Mbappe in his squad ahead of Erling Haaland despite Manchester City scoring two more goals against Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Haaland scored in both halves, either side of a Phil Foden strike, before Ruben Dias scored from close range in extra time to wrap up a comprehensive 4-0 win for Pep’s men Guardiola.

Mbappe also netted a brace in Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 win over Juventus, and Henry still prefers his French compatriot to Haaland – despite the Norwegian scoring 12 goals in his first seven appearances for City.

‘Mbappe can create and finish. Haaland does not create. He finishes,’ Henry told CBS.

“Mbappe can play right and left. He can play in the middle. Haaland can only play in the middle.

“He’s a magnificent player and with him they can win the Champions League last year against Real Madrid. If it was him at the end of those chances that they missed, they will have focused on the scoring one or two. For now, Mbappe is still my vote.

Mbappe also netted twice on Tuesday as PSG beat Juventus 2-1, but he hasn’t been able to follow Haaland’s goalscoring exploits so far this season as he has currently found the net nine times.

Haaland has had a stunning start to his career at City, and Owen Hargreaves doesn’t see him slowing down anytime soon.

He believes the 22-year-old will break Mohamed Salah’s Premier League record for a 38-game season, when he scored 32 goals in 2017-18, and he tipped the Norwegian to score 45 goals in all competitions.

When asked how many goals Haaland would get, Hargreaves told BT Sport: ’45 I think in all competitions. I think he beats the Prem one (record) and gets 45 overall.

Hargreaves was joined in the studio by Rio Ferdinand and Joleon Lescott, and they both agreed that Haaland had every chance of scoring 40+ goals this season.

“I think he will be 41,” predicted Ferdinand.

“Early 1940s,” added Lescott.

City are set to play three times a week until the start of the World Cup in November, and he is also expected to go deep in the four competitions he takes part in this season.

With that in mind, Lescott pointed out that Haaland might have to rest from time to time which could affect his chances of hitting such outrageous numbers.

I think he can maintain the ratio. I just don’t know if he will get enough games,” he said.

However, Ferdinand responded by pointing out that Haaland would not be taking part in the World Cup due to Norway’s failure to qualify, and suggested he could benefit from the break in domestic action.

“The only thing he has in his favor is the World Cup. He won’t go to the World Cup so in his head he will think: “I’m rested, I must have more opportunities to score more goals.”

“I would definitely say it’s one thing in his favor to hit those numbers we’re talking about,” Ferdinand said.

Meanwhile, Guardiola was delighted to see Haaland back on the scoresheet and he praised the striker’s thirst for goals.

“I think his numbers in his career, not just here but in previous teams, are quite similar,” he said in his post-match interview.

“He has an incredible sense of goals. He scored two, he was lucky to score two or three more. He has incredible numbers so we have another final on Saturday against Tottenham and hopefully he can keep scoring goals.

Haaland scored 86 goals in 89 games for Borussia Dortmund, while he also netted 29 times in just 26 games for Red Bull Salzburg before moving to Germany.

Those figures indicate he tends to score around one goal per game, and with City lined up to play over 50 games this season, he’s well on his way to proving Hargreaves and co right with their predictions.
