But then emotions got the better of the former Toffees hitman as he covered his face to hide his tears with his hand and matching shirt before being hugged again by his loved ones.

As nearby Spurs fans chanted the name of the match winner, the striker then broke away before being consoled by team-mate Ivan Perisic who gave him brief words of encouragement before the striker heads for the tunnel.

Sometimes you have to win lousy in the Champions League,” Hargreaves told BT Sport.

‘They [Spurs] didn’t perform brilliantly, but look at what it means to him, to him and his family.

“As a young boy, you dream of coming to this stage and playing in front of this crowd, this stadium.

“He worked so hard. Scoring two goals in your first Champions League game is special. He was exceptional in the air and tonight we saw it.

Peter Crouch also singled out the Brazil international for his praise, highlighting how his contribution was covered up on a difficult night for Spurs who toiled away for much of the game before securing victory.

“It’s a surprise that he [Richarlison] didn’t play in the Champions League, he’s been pretty good for a number of years,’ the former Tottenham striker added.

“Now he has the opportunity. He hasn’t scored his goal at the weekend but that’s what he brings. He brings back goals. Another goal threat, a disappointing night for Tottenham, a game difficult for them, but the most important thing is the score.

Richarlison will now be hoping he can keep his place in Antonio Conte’s starting XI as they look to protect their seven-game unbeaten streak at the start of the season when they make a difficult trip to Manchester City on Saturday.
