Chelsea’s new manager LIVE: Graham Potter set to become new head coach

Chelsea fans react to Thomas Tuchel’s sacking outside Stamford Bridge

Graham Potter has verbally agreed to become Chelsea’s next head coach, following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday.

New owner Todd Boehly moved quickly to fire the German after a Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night, with the aim now to land a new man ahead of the weekend’s Premier League encounter with Fulham. Potter is expected to be the man whose discussions continue over financial details, some of which include a compensation figure that could be as high as £16m if they name him.

Chelsea’s decision is all the more surprising at this stage of the season as Tuchel has played a prominent role in deciding transfer targets this summer, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signing just a week ago and other big-budget arrivals including Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley. Fofana and Rahim Sterling.

How will Brighton move on from Graham Potter? Their player recruitment has been truly excellent across Europe and beyond, so one has to suspect that they also have similar records on potential coaches.

An interesting position for any potential candidate to take on

Graham Potter at Chelsea breaking news

We’re not exactly sure what “communicating internally” entails, but we can all imagine a few people who aren’t on Twitter getting up to speed with the office kettle, right?

In any case, this process is well under way now and Potter will soon be boss of the Blues.

Graham Potter set for Chelsea challenge he couldn’t refuse

By the time Graham Potter was able to sit down with the Chelsea hierarchy, the talks were surprisingly straightforward. Both parties had a clear vision of what they wanted. Chelsea had been considering Potter for weeks. They believe he is precisely the personality profile they are looking for, as well as an extremely promising manager. He has meanwhile detailed what he can do with this team.

The situation is moving so fast, in fact, that it’s fair to wonder if anyone has actually stopped to wonder if now is really the right time.

Couldn’t Potter just wait to try and give Brighton the brilliant season it promises to be? Couldn’t Chelsea wait to be offered proof of such a feat? Do the Big Six really have to go for something interesting that comes from the depths below them? Shouldn’t Potter wait for something more certain, and not such an unknown situation?

The reality is that there is hardly ever a perfect moment or situation in football. One of Potter’s rivals for the job, Mauricio Pochettino, might tell him. Just like Brendan Rodgers. Six months ago, the Leicester City manager would have been the obvious candidate. It is now being debated whether Brighton could be a suitable fit for him as Chelsea aren’t even looking.

Miguel Delaney details Graham Potter’s impending move to Chelsea:

Chelsea, a “natural” next step for Graham Potter

Paul Robinson says the move is a “natural progression” for Graham Potter but there are a lot of issues to deal with – starting with the attack, which has also been a problematic position for the Seagulls.

“Brighton haven’t scored many goals and Chelsea have had the same problem, so it’s interesting to see how he approaches that,” he said.

Brighton star nominated for POTM after shining under Potter

A reminder of Brighton’s quality individually and collectively at the start of this season: Pascal Gross, playing a key role this term under Graham Potter, was nominated alongside Erling Haaland and co for player of the month.

No, Chelsea have no named players.

Psychology, pressing and metamorphosis: what Graham Potter will bring to Chelsea

“Most football managers only talk about training, but Graham was talking about the learning process and how to build a human being. He was totally different as a football manager. For me, as a former teacher, it was amazing, he understands that players and staff are human, and knows how to get the most out of each individual without taking away the group feeling.

Laurent Ostlere delved into Potter’s past to find out exactly what motivates the Brighton boss and what Chelsea will get by appointing him as the new man in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

A very interesting read this afternoon:

Billy Gilmour: The one who got away?

As Cucurella swapped Brighton for Chelsea, spare a thought for Billy Gilmour.

He headed in the opposite direction to work with Potter and get his shot at first-team level.

“Billy is an exciting signing for us, he’s a capable footballer and a great character, he’s got a great personality,” Potter said after signing him.

“He will fit into the group and add competition in midfield. We are really delighted to have him here. As a footballer, Billy is very good technically. he team is our job. If we do that, I think he will have a great time here.

We’ll see in the coming months how well the midfielder adapts to a new coach, but it won’t be Potter who improves him now. Will he regret having moved?

Graham Potter praised for having ‘the best of the team’

TalkSport pundit Jason Cundy – a former Chelsea player in the early 90s – is eager to see the individual improvement Graham Potter will bring to the Stamford Bridge side.

“I saw what he did, I saw with [Leandro] Trossard and [Pascal] Gross – I’m amazed that these two players are still here. I thought Manchester United would participate in at least one of them.

“He gets good players and turns them into brilliant footballers. look what he did [Marc] Cucurelle. Cucurella is not the same player since his arrival at Chelsea!

“What he did for some of those players, the style of football and the way they play. You look at some of those players now.

“You think [Alexis] Mac Allister, the way he became this brilliant [player]. He makes the most of the team he has and I’ll tell you what, he’s got a hell of a team at Chelsea. Don’t make a mistake.

“I can’t wait to see when he gets his hands on this team, what we look like. If we look like Brighton, then we’re in for a treat.
