Jason Cundy has hit out at Virgil van Dijk and says he shouldn’t be compared to John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, two of the best defenders in Premier League history.
The Liverpool centre-back has come under fire after a rocky start to the new campaign, with the Reds conceding 10 goals in seven appearances in all competitions.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have won just two of their six Premier League games, while suffering a heavy 4-1 loss to Napoli in the opener of their Champions League campaign.
Van Dijk’s display was again called into question when he awarded a first-half penalty which was missed by Victor Osimhen.
And Cundy thinks the dropping of a player once considered the best in the world is “colossal”.
Speaking on The Sports Bar, Cundy said: “He has been hailed as one of the greatest centre-halves the Premier League has ever seen – poppycock.”
Responding to Jamie O’Hara saying he’s in the question, Cundy replied, “He’s not and I’ll tell you why he’s not, it’s because it comes down to the longevity.
“If you look at Rio Ferdinand and John Terry who for several years won several Premier Leagues, won the Champions League and won FA Cups. The pair of them won the lot.

“Van Dijk is a brilliant centre-back, but overrated at Liverpool. If you made a better XI at Liverpool, he’s not in there.
O’Hara said, “Oh, Jason. Him and Alan Hansen,” to which Cundy replied, “That’s Mark Lawrenson to me. Lawrenson and Hansen, you can’t do better.
“There’s no doubt how good Van Dijk was, but for now, let’s call it what it is, Van Dijk is an absolute shadow of the player he was.
“He’s overlooked because he’s happy to blame Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Gomez and Tsimikas come in. The mainstay right now is Van Dijk and he’s nowhere near close.
“What about the challenge on Mitrovic for the penalty against Fulham? Mitrovic transforms him, it’s not Van Dijk! He squares it, turns it over, penalty.
“Against Napoli he rushes in and issues a challenge he doesn’t have to meet.”
O’Hara replied, “You completely dig him up. Okay, maybe he’s got a moment, but because he’s a colossal guy, he’s got a moment and loses a little bit of confidence and all of a sudden , Van Dijk is not a great player.
Cundy added: “I’ve never seen John Terry make such decisions or constantly have a bad pass like this. Rio Ferdinand, I’ve never seen him. The dropout of him being the greatest centre-half the world has ever seen now, the dropout is colossal.
“I want Liverpool fans to see it and say it.”
